What happens on my first visit?
Depending on the complexity of your condition, I will take between one and two hours to take a detailed history. This mainly consists of a number of questions, about your symptoms, your medical history, your life-style, diet etc., and will be followed by a short physical exam, including the checking of your blood pressure, and a brief non-invasive examination based on Chinese medical theory. You can ask questions at any time, and I will be pleased to explain the procedures involved. I will then carry out your first treatment with the needles, which are usually left in for a short time, during which time I will stay with you. It is best to wear comfortable clothes if possible, which can be easily arranged to accommodate the points where the needles will be inserted. Mostly this will be on the arms and legs, possibly the back and front of the body, but can be almost anywhere. You may already know that needles are not necessarily placed only in the parts of the body which are causing problems. People vary greatly with regard to their experience of needling. See 'Is acupuncture painful?' on the Home page, for more information.
And after?
I will ask to see you weekly initially for the first few weeks, for about an hour a time, and get you to note any changes to give me feedback when I next see you. Acupuncture is most effective when used as a course of treatment. The benefits are cumulative, and it would be rare for one treatment to succeed in thoroughly helping your symptom(s). As we begin to see some signs of improvement, the treatments will be spaced out to be less frequent, and after that it is very much up to the individual. Some people like to come periodically to help manage their health and energy, others may come if they have a flare-up of an old condition, or a new one develop, and others may come back after several years have elapsed. It may be that I will suggest alterations in the life-style, diet etc. that will support the acupuncture treatment, but I will always do my best to explain why I am advising this.
What now?
If you decide you would like to try acupuncture, please feel free to phone or email me using my contact form. I will explain my availability, and answer any questions you may have. Everything you need to know about your first appointment is on this website, but ask if anything isn't clear. There is easy on-street parking right outside.
Costs
Two hour initial session £60
One hour session £43
Wrapping it up
Acupuncture works. Although no form of treatment can claim 100% success, we have high expectations when we treat, and that includes a good rate of success. I will always give an honest opinion of the likely outcome of a course of treatment, based on my own considerable experience
